Preliminary election results in Vienna
The Vienna elections of 2025 resulted in surprises contrary to early expectations.
Despite the losses, the SPÖ (Austrian Socialist Party) led by Mayor Michael Ludwig maintained its position as the strongest party, achieving 39.3% of the votes.
On the other hand, the FPÖ (Austrian Freedom Party) led by Dominik Nepp achieved a historic leap, as its results tripled compared to 2020, reaching 20.5% and securing second place. The party's vice president, Dagmar Belakowitsch, described the result as "a glimmer of hope for Vienna," while Maximilian Krauss, the head of the party's parliamentary group, considered the result "historic."
The Green Party (Die Grünen) maintained its third position, achieving 14.7%, ahead of the ÖVP (Austrian People's Party), which significantly dropped to 9.6% after being in second place in 2020.
As for the Neos party, despite losing its main candidate Christoph Wiederkehr weeks before the elections, it managed to slightly improve its results to also reach 9.6%. In the past period, Neos was a partner in the coalition with SPÖ, holding the position of Bildungsstadtrat (Head of Education) as well as Vizebürgermeister (Deputy Mayor). The fate of the continuation of this coalition has not yet been decided by election night.
