Germany records more than 1,000 suspicious drone flights

Germany has recorded more than 1,000 suspicious drone flights so far in 2025, according to Holger Münch, head of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), describing the situation as a "significant threat" to national security.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz pointed out that many of these aircraft are suspected to be linked to Russia, although authorities cannot confirm that all incidents are directed by a state. Officials believe that some of the aircraft aim to create a state of uncertainty within Germany.

Air transport has been significantly affected, as airports like Munich halted operations during the Oktoberfest in October, and Berlin Brandenburg Airport suspended flights for nearly two hours in November due to unidentified drones. Drones have also been spotted over military facilities, including a base in Hnoyyn where Ukrainian soldiers were being trained.

In response, German authorities are strengthening defenses. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has opened the Joint Counter-Drone Center (GDAZ) in Berlin to coordinate the efforts of the federal government and state governments to respond quickly and efficiently to drone threats. The center operates around the clock, pooling technical expertise and coordinated procedures to enhance security.

The German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, have requested anti-aircraft tanks capable of neutralizing swarms of drones. In addition, a drone defense unit has been tasked with supporting airports and other sensitive sites during incidents involving drones, reflecting Germany's urgent push to enhance air security.
