University Degrees No Longer Guarantee Financial Security in Germany

Nearly two million Germans with university degrees were at risk of poverty in 2025, showing that higher education no longer guarantees financial stability in Europe’s largest economy.

Official figures reveal that around 1.9 million people with academic qualifications were classified as being at risk of poverty last year. This represents an increase of 350,000 compared with 2022. The data were released by Germany’s official statistics office following a request from the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).

At the same time, the number of graduates in Germany rose to about 21 million nationwide. However, many of these highly educated workers were unable to secure well-paid employment. According to the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit), unemployment among academics increased to 3.3% in 2025, up from 2.2% three years earlier.

Commenting on the figures, ساره فاغنكنيشت said that economic decline and poverty are now affecting all levels of education. She urged policymakers to revive economic growth and ensure that hard work and education once again lead to social mobility and financial security.

Despite the sharp rise among graduates, people with lower qualifications remain the most vulnerable group. Out of 14.3 million individuals with low levels of education, about 4.1 million were considered at risk of poverty in 2025. Under Germany’s definition, anyone earning less than 60% of the median income is classified as at risk, which amounted to €1,446 per month for a single adult last year.
