The teenagers who were shot dead in Amsterdam were staying at a refugee center, "a potential sign of widespread conflict."
Two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, were shot dead late last night in a park in Amsterdam New-West. The police confirmed that both victims were residing in a center for asylum seekers, according to the newspaper Het Parool.
According to internal sources, the shooting may be linked to a broader conflict between young people from Syria and Spanish-speaking youth from a South American background. The police have not confirmed this yet, and investigations are still ongoing.
The incident occurred around 11:45 PM on a bridge in the Beit Wedeck park. Emergency responders attempted to revive the two victims, but they died at the scene. One witness told NOS that the sound of gunfire was clear and unmistakable: "It was clearly gunfire. I realized that immediately. I was walking here with the dog and heard six or seven shots."
Witnesses described the park as a place where tensions and problems recur. One local resident said there are repeated instances of loitering, verbal abuse, and chaos, and that residents have become accustomed to these events. Another visitor added: "The situation is getting worse. It happens everywhere, throughout Amsterdam. People no longer care about it."
No arrests have been made so far. The police are actively investigating to determine whether there is one or more suspects involved, and they are looking into the broader conflict that may be behind the deadly shooting incident.
