Rotten Reality: Most Dutch Fish Shops Fail Food Safety Checks

More than two out of three fish shops checked last autumn failed to meet basic food safety standards. The Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, NVWA) says it will step up inspections this year.

In October and November, the NVWA inspected 105 fish businesses. Inspectors found one or more violations at 72 of them, ranging from missing allergen information to poor hygiene and unsafe food handling.

About half of the offending shops broke the rules on allergen information. At 42 percent, food was not handled correctly, for example because products were not chilled properly or heated thoroughly, increasing the risk of food poisoning.

At 30 percent of businesses, cutting boards, refrigerators, and other equipment were dirty, contaminated, or poorly maintained. In 15 percent of the inspected fish shops, inspectors even found signs of pests such as rats and mice.

The NVWA issued official written warnings to 66 entrepreneurs, drew up five official reports and one formal record, and ordered one business to close. Of the warned companies, 54 say they have taken corrective measures. In 48 cases, this was enough; the rest faced a follow-up inspection.

In response to the findings, the trade association has created a plan to improve compliance with food safety rules. The focus is on raising awareness and helping fish shops adjust their working methods so that hygiene and food safety standards are properly met.
